Florida head coach Jim McElwain confirmed on Monday that linebacker Antonio Morrison will play in the season-opener this Saturday against New Mexico State.
Morrison’s status was uncertain as he was in the process of recovering from two knee surgeries. He sustained the injury in the Birmingham Bowl in January.
“I’m really proud of what he’s done and to see him recover like this – we obviously won’t be one of those deals where he’s playing 80 or 90 plays but at the same time he’s prepared himself and he’s ready to play and we’ll have a plan for that,” said McElwain on Morrison’s status.
The senior is the team’s top returning tackler with 101 tackles in 2014. Morrison is listed as a starter in the depth chart released by the team earlier today.
As for the ongoing quarterback competition, McElwain said again Monday that both Treon Harris and Will Grier will play on Saturday.
“We have a prescribed amount of reps we’re gonna get – they’ll split that,” McElwain said about Monday’s practice. “In the 58-minute practice that we have, we’ll come up with the best plan that we think that’s going to help us be successful.”
