The Florida football team will try to bounce back from what coach Jim McElwain called an “embarrassing” performance against East Carolina when it plays at Kentucky Saturday in the SEC opener for the Gators.

** After setting a record last week when 10 SEC teams were in the AP Top 25 poll, three of those teams drop out after losses last week. Mississippi State, Tennessee and Arkansas all leave the poll.
** The NFL season got started for Florida teams. Miami beat Washington 17-10; Tampa Bay was crushed by Tennessee 42-14 and Jacksonville lost 20-9 at home to Carolina.
** Monday Night Football tonight has Philadelphia playing Atlanta and Minnesota at the San Francisco 49ers.
** Novak Djokovic wins his second U.S. Open men’s singles title in New York when he beat Roger Federer Sunday.
** The sports world mourns the death today of basketball’s Moses Malone, who is found dead at the age of 60. He was a three time NBA MVP.
** In baseball, Tampa Bay falls to Boston 2-0 in 13 innings while the New York Mets complete a four game sweep of Atlanta with a 10-7 win. Miami loses to Washington 5-0. Today, Tampa Bay hosts the New York Yankees, Miami is at the Mets and Atlanta has the day off.
