After a 24-14 loss to Florida (9-1) this past weekend, the South Carolina football team finished 1-7 in the SEC.
The Gamecocks (3-7) are now preparing for two non-conference match ups with the Citadel Bulldogs (7-3) in South Carolina this Saturday at noon and Clemson the following Saturday.
The Gamecocks have won 25 of the last 27 meetings with Citadel and are 40-7-3 in the series. South Carolina head coach Shawn Elliot says the team needs to work on moving the football and helping each other out in order to win the game this Saturday.
The South Carolina offense was nearly non-existent through three quarters at home last week against Florida as it gained less than 50 yards through three quarters of play before coming to life in the fourth quarter to score two touchdowns.
Citadel will come into the game with little to lose and the program won its third Southern Conference championship finishing with a 6-1 record; it is their first Southern Conference championship win since 1992.
Elliott has the Gamecocks playing competitively since he took over for Steve Spurrier who stepped down as head coach a few weeks ago and there’s no guarantee he will even be considered for the full time position. Still, Elliot says even though his team cannot qualify for a bowl game this year, it needs to continue to play strong and play with a hunger.
