The Gator Men’s Golf Team Takes Third Place at Home Invitational

The No. 5 Florida Men’s Golf team hosted the SunTrust Gator Invitational last weekend. The Gators were looking to capture the title for the 26th time in the tournament’s 38-year history. But with eleven teams competing, the Gators came in third. Florida had a slim lead going into the final round…but that wasn’t enough as South Florida came captured the top spot and Vanderbilt took second on Florida’s home turf.

Florida’s Head coach, JC Deacon said the Gators might have been a little carried away after winning by 23 shots in Jacksonville the previous weekend. However, Deacon was still proud of the way his team played at SunTrust.  It was a fun weekend to be on the Gator course. Lots of family and friends came out and the five new freshmen were able to get a feel of what it means to represent the Gator nation.

Freshman Sam Horsfield, who is currently 9th in the Golfweek College Rankings, finished second in the tournament at 9-under. Deacon was impressed with Horsfield’s confidence and says he will be a leader for the team.

A.J. Crouch also had an outstanding first and final round. Deacon says that Crouch saved the Gators at the SunTrust Tournament.

It was disappointing for the Gators when Sophomore, Alejandro Tosti was disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard. Although he put in good work, his tournament scores didn’t count. This dropped the gators to 13 under, moving them into third place instead of remaining tied for second with Vanderbilt at 14 under par.

The Gators will be back in action after spring break. On March 7-9 they will hit the road to Las Vegas for the Southern Highlands Collegiate.
