Anthony Nesty has added a major bullet to his resume. USA Swimming announced him as head coach for the United States men’s swim team ahead of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. Nesty, 55, is currently serving as the head coach for the Florida Gators men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams.
Resume
This won’t be Nesty’s first time dipping his toes into international waters, as he has been a part of national teams in the past. In 2022, Nesty was at the head of the men’s team for the world championships in Budapest. Nesty discussed how that experience was necessary to be appointed head of the Olympic team.
He has also competed as a swimmer in the past, winning a gold medal in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul.
Pressure
Pressure exists at all levels of sports, but it goes up a notch when the team represents a nation. Nesty, having been a coach on national teams, has experienced some of that pressure, but never as the lead guy in the Olympics. He compared the experience at Florida to what he expects being the head coach for the Olympic team.
This is especially true considering the accomplishments of the men’s team in the past. Names and records from the past create expectations for the future, and Nesty looks to match them.
Gators Coaching
Nesty has been the head coach for the Gators men’s team since 2018, and added the women’s team in 2021. He is the most recent winner of the SEC Coach of the Year award, and looks forward to another strong season at Florida.
