Destructive hail and damaging wind roared through parts of North-Central Florida Saturday, leaving many residents picking up pieces of sheet metal, covering broken windows, and filing insurance claims for their vehicles. Nearly all of Saturday’s damage occurred in Columbia, Bradford, Union, and Clay counties.
Bradford County in particular was hit the hardest, with many reports of wind damage and baseball-sized hail in Lawtey. Mobile homes in the area sustained structural damage by what some residents thought was a funnel cloud or tornado. WRUF has received no confirmation of any tornado activity as of late Saturday evening. Another town badly hit was Palatka, in Putnam County, where the wind reportedly knocked down trees and damaged many homes. Another strong cell hit Saint Augustine and dropped half dollar-sized hail on the beach.
