UCF Head FB Coach George O’Leary Retires

October 26, 2015

University of Central Florida head football coach George O’Leary has retired effective immediately.
O’Leary has been a football coach for the Knights since the 2004 season.  During his time with UCF, O’Leary compiled an 81-68 record and led the team to seven bowl games. He also has won three postseason games with the Knights. One of those postseason games being the crown achieving 2013 Fiesta Bowl win against fifth ranked Baylor.

In a statement released by the school, O’Leary said he wanted to retire two seasons ago but he had a plan to retire after this season was over.

“After the 2013 championship season and Fiesta Bowl win I expressed my intention to retire at that time,” O’Leary said. “After significant discussion with the UCF administration, I reconsidered and agreed to coach two additional seasons, 2014 and 2015. The administration has always been aware of my plan to retire after this season.”

However, after a disappointing 2015 season O’Leary said it is best for him to retire right away.

“In an effort to allow UCF to accelerate its search for my successor and clarify the facts regarding my future plans, I am retiring effective immediately,” O’Leary said.

Quarterbacks coach Danny Barrett is named the UCF interim coach.
Currently, UCF is one of four winless teams in FBS at 0-8. Looking ahead, the Knights will play at Cincinnati on Saturday, October 31st.
