About WRUF

Gainesville’s first local radio station and one of the oldest in Florida,  WRUF 850 AM, 98.1 FM, 103.7 HD2 serves 14 counties. The station also features Gator sports and ESPN Radio. WRUF 850 AM went on the air in 1928 and will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2028.

From its early days, WRUF served as both a source of educational programming and a training ground for students, offering news, agricultural updates, and live sports coverage to listeners across North Central Florida. In the 1930s, a young UF student named Red Barber began his broadcasting career at WRUF, launching a legendary trajectory that would make him one of the most iconic voices in sports history. WRUF has shaped the careers of countless media professionals, including Fox Sports host Erin Andrews and ESPN host Laura Rutledge, and remains a vital part of the College of Journalism and Communications.
