A Competitive Start
Florida came out strong, leading for more than five minutes in the opening quarter. The Gators converted on four of their six layup attempts and kept the rebounding battle even at eight each. Senior Ra Shaya Kyle and freshman Liv McGill led the offensive charge, each with four points. However, Texas closed out the quarter ahead, 16-10.
The second quarter saw Florida’s offense suffer. They only scored eight points. Despite nearly doubling Texas’ rebound total (15-6) and forcing 12 first-half turnovers, the Gators struggled to capitalize on extra possessions. By halftime, Florida trailed 29-18.
Texas Takes Over
Texas came out of the locker room on a mission, exploding for 29 points in the third quarter to put the game out of reach. Florida, despite shooting a game-high 44.4% from the field in the third, could not slow down the Longhorns. McGill contributed five points in the first four minutes, but the Gators’ efforts were not enough to contain Texas. Entering the final period the Longhorns had a 54-31 lead.
Closing Out the Game
Florida fought to the end, with Jeriah Warren knocking down the team’s only three-pointer of the game in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter. Warren and Kyle led the team in scoring for the final period with four points each. Florida shot 35.7% from the field and 1-18 from long range. The Longhorns were able to draw numerous fouls on the Gators defense, getting 29 free throw attempts.
What’s Next?
Florida now turns its attention to the SEC Tournament in Greenville, South Carolina. The Gators, ranked 11th in the conference, will face No. 14 Auburn in the opening round on Wednesday. They will need to have a strong showing in order to extend their season. The Gators will need to make it back to a .500 record to make the postseason. Their record of 14-16 requires three SEC tournament wins to qualify for the WBIT (women’s basketball invitation tournament).
