Rays Struggle Against Yankees

The Tampa Bay Rays took on the New York Yankees in a four-game series this past weekend. The Yankees won three out of the four games in the series. The Rays record stands at 9-14 after the series.

What Went Wrong

The Rays offense struggled mightily against the Yankees pitchers. The Rays were outscored 21-11 in the series. Also, the Rays’ only win in the series came on a four-run comeback in the ninth inning and an extra inning walk-off. The Rays were losing for the vast majority of the series.

The reason for this underperformance falls on both sides of the team. While the offense struggled to get hits and runs, the Rays pitchers struggled to contain the Yankees bats. The Rays starting pitchers did not manage more than three strikeouts in half of the series games. Additionally, the Rays gave up at least one home run in three out of the four games in the series.

Rays third baseman Junior Caminero outperformed his colleagues in the series as he recorded a hit in four out of his 12 at-bats along with knocking one out the park.

What Went Right

The Rays did not have very much go right for them in their series loss, as one would expect. Drew Rasmussen provided a bright spot for the Rays pitching in their 1-0 loss to the Yankees. He pitched five innings while only allowing three hits and one run as he tossed seven strikeouts. Also, the Rays showed tremendous grit and toughness in their ninth inning comeback win. The Rays will need to be gritty and have a lot of toughness if they want to survive and prevail in the arduous MLB regular season.

Looking Ahead

The Rays’ next series will be in Arizona as they take on the Diamondbacks. The first game of the series is tomorrow night at 9:40 p.m. and will be streamed on MLB Network.
