Lagway Takes Home Top Honors

October 7, 2025

There was a shift during the bye week for Florida Football (2-3, 1-1 SEC). After a three-game losing streak, the Gators did the impossible (or what fans had lost hope for). The team beat the Texas Longhorns (3-2, 0-1 SEC), 29-21, and showed they were still here to compete.

Quarterback DJ Lagway notably had an impressive game. Due to his performance, Lagway was added to the Davey O’Brien Award’s Great Eight List for Week Six, received an honorable mention for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, and was named SEC Offensive Player of the Week.

The Davey O’Brien Award honor secures Lagway a position on the Davey O’Brien Award’s Midseason watchlist. This award is presented to college football quarterbacks who show exceptional teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership, and skill both on and off the field.

One of the keys to Lagway’s success was the return of wide receiver Dallas Wilson. Lagway started to build a bond with the true freshman, and he completed two passes to Wilson for 111 receiving yards and threw two touchdowns during the Texas matchup.

“We really had a good two weeks to just work on our connection, and I feel like it paid off, and I’m excited to see where this connection continues to go,” Lagway said.

The quarterback also received an honorable mention from his home state. He went to Willis High School in Willis, Texas, making him eligible for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award. It honors the best quarterbacks who either play Division I football in Texas or went to high school in Texas.

The performance against the Longhorns  put Lagway on the map for all these accolades. He racked up statistics, including making 21/28 attempts, resulting in 298 receiving yards. This made him the only quarterback in the SEC to complete 75% of his passes while throwing more than 250 yards in a conference game this season.

This was the Gators’ first-ever program win against the Texas Longhorns and helped them maintain their undefeated record at home against top 10 SEC opponents in Napier’s tenure.

Lagway will travel to his home state on Saturday as the Gators look to keep this momentum going. Florida takes on No.5 Texas A&M at 7 p.m. in College Station, Texas.
