September 20, 2011

New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera became the all time saves leader in baseball history when he picks up the save Monday in a New York 6-4 win over Minnesota.

Rivera now has 602 saves, one more than former leader Trevor Hoffman. He pitched a perfect ninth inning to get it.

In other baseball, Boston’s wild card lead over Tampa Bay remained at two games after it split a doubleheader with Baltimore Monday. Texas gains a half game on Los Angeles in the AL West after the Angels lose 3-2 to Toronto.

In the National League, Atlanta’s wild card lead over St.Louis is now only two and a half games after the Cardinals edge Philadelphia 4-3 and Atlanta loses to Florida 6-5. Milwaukee lost 5-2 to Chicago keeping their magic number at four to clinch the NL Central.

And Arizona is a step closer to clinching the NL West after Ian Kennedy becomes the first pitcher in the league to win 20 games as the D’Backs blank Pittsburgh 1-0.
