UNC vs. Florida: An Analysis of the March Matchup Nobody Saw Coming

March 26, 2026

Tragedy struck for two renowned college basketball programs in the past week.

The Florida Gators were eliminated in the second round of the NCAA Tournament as a No. 1 seed and the North Carolina Tar Heels, after being eliminated in the first round, fired head coach Hubert Davis after five seasons.

Thus, Florida’s Todd Golden is on their radar, as CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander reported that UNC is expected to go outside the North Carolina family — an atypical move for the school. Davis, its most recent hire, played for the Tar Heels from 1988-1992, but back-to-back first round exits signaled that the program needed a home-run hire in the 2026 offseason.

So here’s a comparison of Florida and UNC’s pitches for the coach, the reasons why he would consider leaving a program that has earned back-to-back No. 1 seeds?

Well, North Carolina has been one of the most celebrated basketball operations in the country, defining the sport for over a century. The Tar Heels need to hit big on another legendary coach like Roy Williams or Dean Smith to continue the tradition that comes with wearing the iconic Carolina blue.

UNC also has the most Final Four appearances in the country (21) and has hoisted the national championship trophy six times. Carolina is third all-time behind Kansas and Kentucky with 2,395 wins. Smith’s four corners offense was so efficient at keeping the ball away from the other team that the NCAA had to introduce the shot clock. The jumpman logo the Gators wear on every piece of team equipment features one of the greatest Tar Heels of all time, Michael Jordan. The term “blue blood” is a cliche in the modern basketball landscape, but there’s no doubt North Carolina is one.

Since the 2015-16 season, North Carolina has played in the national championship three times: twice with Williams, once with Davis. The Gators have only reached the pinnacle of college basketball once since then. In that same span, UNC has won 70.6% of its games compared to Florida’s 65.4%. Florida has only advanced past the first weekend of March Madness twice since the 2016 tournament, UNC has done it five times.

Other than the results, UNC has historically had an advantage with recruiting due to the prowess of the program. Florida has only ranked ahead of UNC once in the past 10 years according to 247 Sports. The Tar Heels have landed numerous top-10 recruits, the most recent being Caleb Wilson, a projected top-five pick in the upcoming NBA draft. To an extent, the logo is the driving force behind top talent sporting Carolina blue. While the portal is becoming further prioritized, the top teams will look to a highly-touted freshman to come in and contribute, like Darius Acuff for Arkansas or Cameron Boozer for Duke. Florida hasn’t even had a five-star prospect since Scottie Lewis and Tre Mann in 2019.

In terms of NIL resources, the Tar Heels reportedly spent at least $4 million more than the Gators for their 2025-26 roster. The history, recruiting, success and funds all point to Carolina as the better job, but can they afford a coach in the likes of Golden?

According to the NCAA Membership Financial Reporting System, the Tar Heels were in the green financially in the years 2022, 2023 and 2024. However, the UNC athletics department spent $187.9 million in 2025, with only $172.9 coming back in revenue. For Florida, $200.9 million went out in 2025 with $221 million coming back. Add that to the fact that UNC hired Bill Belichick to a five-year, $50 million deal in 2024, and North Carolina is in a financial conundrum.

Golden’s buyout is $16 million until April 16, when it drops to $11 million. The transfer portal opens April 7, so if the Tar Heels want to take Golden, they’ll have to buck up and pay the $16 million if they want any chance at top talent in the portal. Golden will also command one of the highest salaries in college basketball, already being a top-five highest paid coach with a $6.8 million per year salary and rumors of a contract extension with Florida. Let’s not forget that there is still the buyout for Hubert Davis, who is owed $5 million.

Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin isn’t too concerned with Golden leaving Gainesville.

“I wish all those programs really good luck,” Stricklin said. “Todd’s going to be here for a long time.”

Any financial advisor would hang up the phone if UNC called and said it wanted Golden, but who knows what one of the most storied programs in basketball history is willing to do to get back to a championship.
