Florida Baseball Takeaways: Lights Out in Athens Returns Gators to Top 20

April 13, 2026

The lights went out in Athens, Ga., this weekend as the Gators shut down the Bulldogs.

Florida baseball continued its dominance against ranked opponents this weekend, taking two of three games at then-No. 4 Georgia to secure a statement SEC road series win after defeating then-No. 5 Florida State in Tallahassee on Tuesday.

The 3-1 week against top-five foes returned the Gators to the D1Baseball Top 25 on Monday at No. 20. Georgia dropped one spot to No. 5 and FSU to No. 8.

Florida did make it to the Top 10 in the Baseball America poll at No. 7 on Monday morning. WRUF.com uses the D1Baseball rankings in its coverage.

The Gators (27-10, 9-6 SEC) left the weekend with a nation-best 10-1 record against ranked opponents this season after facing a Bulldogs team (29-8, 11-4) that had yet to lose a series and led the nation with 98 home runs.

Pitching Dominance Over Elite Offense

The Gators limited Georgia’s explosive lineup throughout the weekend. Facing one of the most dangerous offenses in college baseball, Florida’s pitching staff rose to the occasion to keep the Dawgs from going yard.

In Game 1 on Friday, Aiden King set the tone as he carried a perfect game into the bottom of the seventh. He finished allowing just two runs on two hits over 7 ⅔ innings while striking out six.

“That’s about as well-pitched of a game as I’ve seen in a long time,” Florida coach Kevin O’Sullivan said. “He commanded both sides of the plate, used all of his pitches. In total command.”

Florida’s bullpen has struggled at times, but Liam Peterson delivered a strong seven-inning performance in Game 2 Saturday, finding momentum in the strike zone as about 70% of his 97 pitches were strikes.

Meanwhile, Russell Sandefer is still searching for consistency as he allowed five earned runs over two innings before being pulled in Game 3 on Sunday

The Bulldogs scored just 14 runs across the three games, their lowest total in any weekend series this season, and Florida became the only team to hold them to seven runs or fewer in all three games.

The Gators’ Power Hitting

Despite being outhit 28-25 across the weekend, Florida’s power at the plate proved to be the difference in winning the series.

After collecting just two hits in Saturday, the Gators responded in the rubber match with one of their most impressive offensive performances of the season. Florida recorded 16 hits, four of them home run, to tie its season-high run total in SEC play with 13.

“The guys really used the middle of the field,” O’Sullivan said. “Today was one of our best days, offensively.”

Kyle Jones, who grew up in Athens, delivered a career-high five hits on top of one homer, three runs and two RBIs in the series finale.

Hayden Yost also led the way with two home runs to deep right field,  doubling his season total. He finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs, three runs, two homers and one walk.

“That’s awesome for him. He’s a tremendously hard worker, and was really good,” O’Sullivan said.

The Gators’ offense set the tone early with four players, including Ethan Surowiec, Jones, Cade Kurland and Yost recording multi-hit performances by the end of the fourth inning. Surowiec led the surge with three hits in the first three frames.

“The guys in the dugout were outstanding today and obviously a great all-around effort,” O’Sullivan said.

The Gators return home for a Tuesday game against Bethune-Cookman (25-11) at 6:30 p.m. on SEC Network+ (Radio coverage begins at 6:25 p.m. on 98.1-FM/850-AM WRUF).
