Gators Receiver Room Shows Potential in Spring Game

April 15, 2026

Florida Gators fans finally got their first look at the Jon Sumrall era on Saturday in the spring game at Florida Field, and while the start was  sluggish, the offense quickly came alive and offered a glimpse of real firepower that could define the 2026 season.

The quarterback battle remained front and center, with Tramell Jones Jr. and Aaron Philo splitting equal reps.

However, by the conclusion of the game, a different position group made itself the center of attention. Florida’s wide receiver room also featured several new faces making their Gator debuts, including: Bailey Stockton, Micah Mays Jr. and Eric Singleton.

Singleton, who transferred from Auburn, played under new offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner at Georgia Tech, giving him familiarity with the system. Stockton also arrived from Georgia Tech, adding another experienced piece to the offense.

Mays Jr., a transfer from Wake Forest, entered spring ball without much hype. Mays, who recorded 18 catches for 302 yards last season, was a three-star recruit coming out of high school and did not draw significant attention upon his commitment.

That changed Saturday.

Mays Jr. delivered a breakout performance, hauling in four receptions for 122 yards and two touchdowns, quickly turning heads — including Sumrall’s.

“Yeah, he’s flashed,” Sumrall said. “In particular, making plays down the field or getting the ball in his hands on the move as a route runner. He’s been explosive. He tracks it well. He catches it clean.”

Jones Jr. also praised Mays’ performance, highlighting their 75-yard touchdown connection.

“One-on-one, you’ve got to give him a chance — athletes make plays,” Jones said. “When you create explosive plays on offense, your win margin goes up.”

Jones also connected with Singleton on a 38-yard touchdown.

The Gators’ receiving talent includes returning standout Vernell Brown III. He contributed four catches for 47 yards and a touchdown Saturday, including a 30-yard scoring reception from Philo.

While the offense started slowly, Saturday offered a glimpse of optimism. That is before considering Dallas Wilson’s role with the team going into his sophomore season, with the former five-star recruit unable to participate in the spring game. Wilson was sidelined for most of 2025, but returned to practice in April and could be an important part of the receiver room next season.

With a mix of returning production and transfers, Florida continues to build its offense under Sumrall, centered around its talented wideouts.
