Tensions Boil Over After Florida’s Super Regional Loss to Texas Tech

May 24, 2026

Following Florida’s drama-filled run-rule loss to Texas Tech in Game 3 of the Gainesville Super Regional, emotions reached a boiling point.

Tensions had been building throughout the weekend after former Gator Mia Williams was hit by a pitch five times across the three-game series by Florida ace Keagan Rothrock, including the first pitch of both Game 1 and Game 3. After Williams was hit in the opening inning Sunday, Texas Tech’s Veronica Valdez was seen yelling toward Rothrock from the dugout.

“There’s never been a problem ever, kids transfer all the time,” Florida coach Tim Walton said after Sunday’s game.

The umpires later issued Texas Tech a warning in Game 3 after Williams hit a two-run home run in the second inning.

Throughout Sunday’s winner-take-all contest, emotions remained high between both teams and the crowd at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium. Walton was ejected in the fifth inning, something he said caught him off guard.

“I’ve never been thrown out like that before without a warning,” Walton said. “So that was a little surprising to me.”

After Florida’s season-ending loss, the Gators returned to the locker room following their traditional “It’s Great to be a Florida Gator” chant without shaking hands with the Red Raiders. Texas Tech players celebrated in front of the Florida crowd while flashing the school’s “Guns Up” hand gesture, drawing angry reactions from fans near the field.

As fans exited the stadium, Greg Rothrock, father of Florida pitcher Keagan Rothrock, got into a verbal confrontation with a Texas Tech fan.

After the game, Walton maintained there was no intent behind any of the hit-by-pitches involving Williams.

“It makes no sense to me at all,” Walton said. “There’s no place for it at all.”

Texas Tech coach Gerry Glasco praised Williams for how she handled the attention throughout the series.

“When they did pitch to her she took the challenge and hit it out,” Glasco said. “She won every battle that was thrown her way.”

The tension surrounding Williams’ return to Gainesville began long before Super Regional weekend. After Florida’s two-game exit at the 2025 Women’s College World Series, Williams transferred from the program following two seasons with the Gators.

Both of Williams’ parents, Jason and Denika Williams, are former Florida athletes. Before the series, Denika Williams took to Facebook to criticize Walton and Florida’s pitching staff.

“And here’s some advice, instead of the 18 shortstops you keep getting. GO GRAB A PITCHER!!!!!,” Williams wrote.
