Report: Gators Football Hires Greg McMahon as Special Teams Analyst

Gators football continues to make moves this offseason ahead of fall camp on Aug. 5.

Greg McMahon will return to coaching to take over as special teams analyst on coach Jon Sumrall’s inaugural staff, according to CBS Sports.

McMahon has a 40-year coaching career. He served as special teams coordinator at Tulane from 2023-24. Prior to Tulane, he coached at LSU from 2017-2021 and in the NFL with New Orleans for 11 years.

In 2023, the Green Wave special teams ranked first in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) and 10th nationally. McMahon’s unit averaged 24.81 yards per return.

His time at LSU marked a league-leading points earned on kicks in both 2018 and 2019. Kicker Cade York also set program records for the most career 50-yard field goals and the longest field goal in school history.

With the Saints, McMahon was behind one of the most memorable plays in league history. A successful onside kick to open the second half of Super Bowl XLIV pushed the Saints from a 10-6 deficit to a 13-10 lead.

McMahon coached two title teams in his career: the Saints in 2010 and LSU in 2019.

He will work under first-year special teams coordinator Johnathan Galante. The Gators gained three new players to their special teams roster, including kicker Patrick Durkin, punter Alec Clark and long snapper Carter Milliron. Florida’s kicker last season, Trey Smack, was drafted by the Packers.

Galante addressed the rebuilding of the special teams unit in February.

“It starts from the top down. And we’ve got a system to handle all those,” Galante said. “Game day operations don’t just happen on game day. You’ve got to practice it. It’s rehearsed. It’s something we start even in the special teams meeting. So organization, communication, it can’t be different on Saturday than it is during the week. So, it’s a process.”

Former Green Wave kicker Patrick Durkin and punter Alec Clark are two transfers to look out for ahead of Florida’s upcoming season.

Durkin led the AAC in field goals per game and field goal percentage in 2025. Clark also made conference headlines, averaging 46.5 yards per punt, ranking among the nation’s best.

Galante also bragged about Sumrall’s respect for special teams in the spring.

“He loves special teams, has a passion for it,” he said. “…And that’s critical for my success and our team success on special teams, so it’s a big deal. Maybe the biggest thing. So very happy about that.”

The Gators kick the season off in The Swamp against FAU on Sept. 5.
