No. 20 Florida Soccer Routs Jacksonville to Cap Undefeated Homestand

In the last month, Gators soccer coach Nick Zimmerman has repeatedly emphasized playing an intense, high-risk, high-reward game.

And on Thursday night, No. 20 Florida reaped the rewards of Zimmerman’s game plan, routing Jacksonville 6-0 to wrap up an undefeated three-match homestand.

The dominant win marks the Gators’ third straight victory in the past week, following a win against Coastal Carolina and a huge upset against defending champions Florida State.

Despite going into halftime with a comfortable 2-0 lead, Florida (3-1) did not take its foot off the gas during the second half, creating opportunity after opportunity until the final whistle. Five different players got on the board for Florida, with senior forward Lena Bailey logging her first career brace in the process.

“We were on the front foot,” Zimmerman said postgame. “We were more intentional with our actions, and so many players stepped up in the second half.

“[I’m] really proud of them, finishing it the way they did.”

Ranked for the first time since 2020, Florida took little time to open the scoring, thanks to senior forward Zoe Main finding the back of the net in the seventh minute with a right-footed shot. Minutes later, Main was running down the field, looking to score again before Jacksonville defender Lina Ballmann fouled her just outside the box, earning a red card.

Down to 10 players, the previously unbeaten Jacksonville (1-1-1) struggled to stop a relentless Florida attack. In the 20th minute, sophomore defender Katie Johnston came off the bench and immediately sank a screamer into the net on the free kick. Nine minutes later, she got the ball over to freshman midfielder Courtney Hogan, whose on-target shot was saved by Jacksonville goalkeeper Taylor Gardner.

Johnston and senior defender Hannah Jibril keyed Florida toward maintaining possession, both playing defensively and creating chances throughout the first half.

Going into halftime, the Gators outshot the Dolphins 6-1, and that gap only widened in the second half, with the Gators outshooting them 16-1.

In the 55th minute, freshman midfielder Iori Watanabe logged her first collegiate goal, scoring off an assist from Main. Watanabe was one of several freshmen who put up strong performances Thursday. Defenders Lael Hill and Nylah Norris, midfielder Mia Gray and Hogan are all freshmen who have stepped up early in the season — an accomplishment Zimmerman celebrates.

“It was great to see so many firsts for a lot of them,” he said.

Lena Bailey scored a header in the 64th minute thanks to assists from sophomore Tatum Borman and junior defender Skye Barnes. Seconds later, she provided an assist for senior forward Montelene Dymond’s goal, bringing the score to 5-0.

But Bailey was not done yet. In the 79th minute, she found the bottom center of the net to record her second goal of the night and wrap up scoring for the Gators. Bailey credited her success to her relationships with her teammates.

The all-around team performance is something the Gators are very proud of and hope to keep achieving, Zimmerman said. Main felt similarly.

“It’s good to see that no matter what, we’re going to approach every game the same,” Main said. “It’s good to see us continue to score so many goals in every game.”

With Thursday’s game, Florida’s total goal count across four games sits at 15, while the program’s record against Jacksonville improved to 6-0, solidifying a historic dominance that had not been challenged since 2015.

Florida looks to extend its win streak Sunday on the road against another high-scoring team, Florida Atlantic. The Owls (1-2-1) wrapped up a strong game of their own Thursday, defeating Howard 7-0.

Sunday’s game, set to kick off at 1 p.m. at FAU Soccer Stadium, will mark Florida’s second away game following its 4-3 loss to Central Florida to open the season. But the Gators are focused on producing a different result this time around.

“We’re going to have to be at our very, very best,” Zimmerman said. “It’s going to be good for us to get on the road.”
