Report: Bucs, Baker Mayfield Agree on Massive Contract Extension

Despite shutting down contract extension talks once training camp began, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Baker Mayfield have agreed on a three-year contract extension worth $165 million, according to ESPN.

This season had marked the last year of his previous three-year contract worth approximately $33 million per year.

Prior to joining the Bucs, Mayfield’s career was marked by instability. The former No. 1 overall pick in 2018 played for the Cleveland Browns before being traded to the Carolina Panthers in 2022.

Mayfield was released by the Panthers after appearing in just seven games and signed with the Los Angeles Rams for the remainder of the season. The following offseason, he signed a one-year deal worth up to $4 million with the Bucs.

Joining the Bucs after the Tom Brady era, Mayfield had very big shoes to fill. He has since revitalized his career in Tampa Bay in what has been one of the biggest underdog stories of the last decade, and he now has even more to prove following his lucrative extension.

In 51 games across three seasons as a Buccaneer, Mayfield has thrown for 12,237 yards and 95 touchdowns while completing 66.3% of his passes. He has also led eight game-winning drives.

Entering his first season without Mike Evans, it’ll be fascinating to see who Mayfield’s primary targets will be. Second-year wide receiver Emeka Egbuka, who had an impressive rookie season, along with veteran Chris Godwin and Jalen McMillan headline the Bucs receiver corps.

The Buccaneers open their 2026 season Sunday against the Bengals in Cincinnati.
