Gators Held Scoreless for First Time in SEC Opener Loss

Gators Soccer outshot South Carolina on Thursday, but Florida’s offense came away with something unfamiliar this season: no goals.

After scoring in each of their first seven matches, the No. 23 Gators found no way past the No. 19 Gamecocks in their SEC opener in Columbia. Florida produced 15 shots to South Carolina’s 10, hit the crossbar and pushed until the final seconds. Still, the breakthrough never came in a 1-0 loss.

Florida dropped to 4–3–1 overall (0-1 SEC). The defeat marked the Gators’ second consecutive loss to a ranked opponent after Sunday’s Sept. 6 setback against then-No. 5 Wake Forest. Florida also fell to 19–9–4 all-time in SEC openers.

South Carolina improved to 7–1 overall (1–0 SEC), extending its winning streak to six matches. The Gamecocks also remained unbeaten at home, earning their fifth victory. 

The opening minutes offered encouragement. Addy Hess sent Florida’s first attempt high and wide in the third minute, and Kelsey Smith tested Gamecocks goalkeeper Christina Tsaousis with a low shot in the seventh, but Tsaousis kept the match scoreless.

South Carolina responded with a succession of set pieces, earning five corners before the 20-minute mark. An apparent goal by Maryn Wolf was subsequently disallowed for handball, giving Florida a reprieve as the hosts began producing more opportunities.

The breakthrough arrived in the 39th minute, when Gators goalie Jayden Emmanuel stopped Autumn Cayelli’s shot, but Reese Slater anticipated Florida’s defense reaching the rebound with an open net and gave South Carolina a 1–0 lead. Slater’s goal was her second of the season. 

Florida’s answer nearly came less than two minutes later. With space outside the box, senior forward Zoe Main let a shot fly toward goal. Her effort struck the crossbar and went out, leaving Florida agonizingly close to an equalizer.

The Gators turned up the pressure again as halftime approached. Tsaousis stopped both Tatum Borman and Main consecutively with amazing saves. Florida kept pushing for a tie moments after conceding with a high-line pressure that was stopped by the half mark whistle. 

That late push gave Florida a 9–8 advantage in shots at the break. South Carolina, however, had kept the Gators busy defending set pieces, piling up nine corners to Florida’s two.

Florida had 45 minutes to find an answer, and the Gators wasted little time pushing forward. A corner less than a minute after the restart offered an early opening, but South Carolina protected its lead.

Then the chances dried up. Florida’s back line, anchored by Skye Barnes and Lael Hill, kept the deficit manageable. Behind them, Emmanuel smothered a South Carolina free-kick delivery before the Gamecocks could turn it into a shot.

By the 65th minute, neither team had recorded an attempt on target in the half, and Florida’s window to respond was shrinking.

Barnes received a yellow card in the 67th minute as the physical battle continued. South Carolina threatened again in the 73rd, but Florida’s wall blocked Cuyler Zulauf’s free kick, keeping the Gators within reach.

With about 15 minutes remaining, Lena Bailey earned a free kick near the left side of the penalty area. Florida could not capitalize, but more opportunities soon followed.

Lael Hill and Bailey attempted shots seconds apart in the 78th minute, with Bailey’s effort blocked. Tatum Borman also had a shot blocked moments later.

The Gators earned four corners in less than three minutes during that stretch, repeatedly giving themselves another chance to pull level. Each time, South Carolina’s lead remained intact.

Zoe Main had one last opportunity with 16 seconds remaining. Her team-high fifth shot sailed wide right, taking the Gators’ final chance at an equalizer with it.

Despite the late pressure, Florida never put a shot on target in the second half as South Carolina held on for the victory.

The Gators will look to rest and regroup at Mississippi State on Sept. 18. Kickoff at MSU Soccer Field in Starkville is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET on SEC Network+.
