Jaguars Elevate Nick Mullens Over Quinn Ewers to QB2

Just one day before the Jacksonville Jaguars’ season opener against the Cleveland Browns, there was still a question mark at quarterback behind Jacksonville’s star Trevor Lawrence.

The Jaguars put the speculations to rest Saturday afternoon, though, officially elevating Nick Mullens to the active roster as the backup for Sunday. The move sent Quinn Ewers to the practice squad and deemed him the emergency quarterback — available only if Lawrence and Mullens are sidelined with an injury.

The Jaguars traded for Ewers, the former Miami Dolphins backup, and sent away a 2028 sixth-round pick on Aug. 29, bolstering the quarterback room. However, it was still uncertain whether Ewers would fill in behind Lawrence or if veteran Nick Mullens would retain his spot as the backup.

Mullens appeared in five games for Jacksonville during his 2025 campaign, completing 3 of 3 passes for 19 yards. The 31-year-old initially went undrafted and signed with San Francisco in 2017. Since, he has started 20 contests and played in 34 games across his career. Along with Jacksonville and San Francisco, he also spent time in Cleveland and Minnesota.

Mullens boasts a 66% career completion percentage on 533 of 808 passing for 6,448 yards, 34 touchdowns and an 88.3 passer rating.

Jacksonville will face Cleveland Sunday at EverBank Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
