Five Takeaways from Florida’s Win vs. Auburn

Florida passed its first true test of the season Saturday night, defeating Auburn 44-39 at Jordan-Hare Stadium to open SEC play. The win marked Jon Sumrall’s first SEC victory as a head coach and Florida’s first road win over Auburn since 1999.

The Gators’ offense continued its explosive start to the season against a tougher opponent, while the defense created consistent pressure but struggled to prevent Auburn (2-1, 01 SEC) from making big plays. Penalties also remained an issue for Florida, carrying over a problem that began against Campbell.

With Florida (3-0, 1-0 SEC) returning to The Swamp next weekend for a matchup against No. 4 Ole Miss (3-0, 1-0 SEC), here are five takeaways from Saturday night’s victory.

1. Jadan Baugh continues to establish himself as Florida’s offensive centerpiece

Jadan Baugh entered Auburn as one of the biggest storylines surrounding Florida’s first SEC matchup of the season. He left Jordan-Hare having further established himself as one of the Gators’ most important offensive weapons.

“Each and every day, I put so much work in,” Baugh said. “Honestly, I give it up to my whole line. If I’m doing what I’m doing, that means those guys are doing the work.”

The junior running back rushed for 162 yards and three touchdowns, including two touchdowns of more than 30 yards. Baugh opened the second half with a 33-yard touchdown run before delivering perhaps his biggest play of the night.

With Florida facing fourth-and-one, Baugh broke through the Auburn defense and took the ball 53 yards to the end zone, extending the Gators’ lead to 41-24.

After rushing for at least 100 yards in each of Florida’s first two games, Baugh showed that his production could continue against SEC competition.

2. Florida’s offense answered its first SEC challenge

Florida entered its first SEC game of the season facing a much tougher test than the first two weeks. After scoring a combined 118 points against Florida Atlantic and Campbell, the Gators had to find a way to maintain that offensive rhythm against Auburn.

Florida did just that, scoring 44 points while consistently finding ways to move the ball.

The Gators used a variety of plays to keep Auburn’s defense off balance. In the second quarter, wide receiver Kahleil Jackson launched a 45-yard pass to tight end Amir Jackson on a double-pass, moving Florida to Auburn’s 13-yard line.

The Gators also continued to find success through the air, with quarterback Aaron Philo connecting with Dallas Wilson for a 20-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

3. Aaron Philo passes his first SEC test

Philo entered Jordan-Hare Saturday night facing his first SEC road start as Florida’s quarterback.

“He’s got a little bit of a cowboy mentality,” Sumrall said. “He’s tough as nails.”

After putting together strong performances against FAU and Campbell, Philo completed 15 of 22 passes for 204 yards and a touchdown against Auburn.

His first SEC game was not without mistakes. Auburn intercepted one of Philo’s passes early in the first quarter, giving the Tigers an opportunity to respond after Florida’s opening touchdown. 

However, Philo continued to operate the offense and later connected with Wilson for the 20-yard touchdown that extended Florida’s lead to 34-17.

Philo’s performance was another step in his transition to Florida, giving the Gators a quarterback capable of making plays while working alongside a strong rushing attack led by Baugh. 

4. Florida’s defense creates pressure, but struggles to contain Auburn

Florida’s defense entered Saturday with the challenge of containing Byrum Brown, one of Auburn’s biggest weapons.

The Gators consistently pressured Brown throughout the game, recording seven sacks and forcing two first-half interceptions. Emmanuel Oyebadejo and Jayden Woods led the way with 2.5 sacks each. 

Despite the pressure, Auburn continued to find ways to move the ball and stay within striking distance. The Tigers finished with 373 total yards and repeatedly responded after Florida extended its lead.

While the pass rush provided a major bright spot for Florida, the defense still has room to improve, particularly when it comes to preventing explosive plays.

5. Penalties remain a problem

Florida’s penalty issues from Week 2 followed the Gators into their first SEC game. 

“The penalties were out of control,” Sumrall said.

After committing eight penalties against Campbell, Florida was flagged 16 times for 138 yards against Auburn. The penalties repeatedly put Florida in difficult situations and allowed Auburn to remain competitive throughout the game.

Florida managed to overcome the struggles and leave Auburn with its first SEC win of the season. However, the Gators will need to clean up the issues quickly with No. 8 Ole Miss coming to Gainesville next Saturday.

“We still have a lot to improve upon,” Sumrall said after the win. “It’s not our best football.”
