Gators Soccer Looks for First Conference Win in SEC Home Opener

Florida soccer hosts Texas in its SEC home opener Thursday. The Gators are looking to get back on track after going 0-2-1 in their last three games, including a loss to No. 19 South Carolina and a draw with Mississippi State in their first two conference matches. 

This won’t be easy as the Longhorns are off to a hot and surprising start with a 5-2-2 record after ending the 2025 season 4-12-1. One player that may give the Gators a hard time is Florida State transfer Mya Brandon, who was named SEC Offensive Player of the Week.  

“There’s a number of players that we’ve got to be constantly aware of,” coach Nick Zimmerman said. “Our backs have done an incredible job and our whole group collectively have done really, really well again with the little things.”

When asked how captain Kyra Taylor has improved as a scorer, Zimmerman discussed how she perfects the “little things,” sets the standard for the team and embodies every challenge thrown at her while tuning out the external noise. 

With Florida and Texas both searching for their first SEC win of the season, Zimmerman and UT coach Margueritte Bates are trying to insert their teams into the top of the SEC leaderboard as first-year head coaches for their respective teams.

The change of scenery back to Gainesville may aid the Gators, as they’ve posted a 5-1 record at the Diz.
