Gators Basketball’s 5 Biggest Matchups of the 2026-27 Season.
The Florida Gators men’s basketball team is back. Head coach Todd Golden and his team returned to the court at the O’Connell Center Monday.
With official practice underway, excitement is growing around the team. The expectation remains the same: to cut down the nets at the end of it all. The road to March starts now.
The team returns four of its starters in Thomas Haugh, Alex Condon, Boogie Fland and Naismith Defensive Player of the Year Rueben Chinyelu. While some key departures included Xaivian Lee and Micah Handlogten, the culture, heart and grit remain.
The journey won’t be easy for the Gators. The schedule features elite non-conference battles and high-stakes SEC contests. Here are five marquee matchups for the 2026-27 season:
- Miami
Florida will tip off its season against rival Miami in the Orion180 Tip-Off Classic on Nov. 2, at Benchmark International Arena in Tampa.
This will be the first official glimpse at the highly anticipated team. The arena is also the place where the one-seeded Gators’ dreams were shattered last season in a 73-72 second-round upset loss to nine-seeded Iowa.
The schools have matched up 72 times with the Gators leading the series 48-24. The team’s latest matchup last year went to the Gators, 82-68. Miami’s current head coach Jai Lucas has some history with the Gators, as he was a former player.
Before the rivalry resumed last season, Lucas spoke to Jon Rothstein in an interview with CBS Sports.
“We will have a big neutral instate rivalry renewed…that will be our big one,” he said.
Packed with rich history and a rivalry renewed, this tipoff is set to be one for the books.
2. Players Era 8
The Gators will head to Las Vegas for Players Era 8 on Nov. 17. The tournament features a competitive bracket filled with heavy hitters.
Opening the tournament against Notre Dame, the Gators will immediately be on the clock. A win right out of the gate could set Florida up for some big-time matchups.
Powerhouse programs in the tournament include Houston, Kansas and Auburn. If Houston and Florida both win in the first round, the Gators are looking at a potential rematch of the 2025 national championship.
While the teams haven’t met since Florida’s 65-63 win, Michelob ULTRA Arena could be the place it happens.
3. Duke
As part of the SEC-ACC Challenge, the team will welcome the Duke Blue Devils to Gainesville on Dec. 1.
In 2025,Florida faced a devastating 67-66 loss at the hands of a go-ahead 3-pointer by Isaiah Evans with 21 seconds to go and a final-possession turnover. Golden expressed regret after the loss.
“I should’ve burned a timeout,” Golden said.
The Gators will be given a chance to avenge the loss early in the season. While Duke leads the series 15-4, the Gators are no stranger to this level of competition.
Given the two powerhouse programs’ histories and accolades, the meeting is set to be one of the biggest games of the regular season.
4. Texas
Florida tips off SEC regular-season play on the road at Texas on Jan. 2. The game marks the Gators’ defense of their SEC regular-season title.
The first game of the home-and-away series, the matchup features some of the biggest names in college basketball, with highly sought-after recruit Marcus Spears Jr. set to join the Longhorns.
The two most recent matchups ended in wins for the Gators. In 2025, Florida took the game at home 84-60, and in 2026, the Gators won the game on the road 84-71.
The first taste of SEC play is sure to be eventful.
5. Kentucky
The traditional close to the SEC regular season features Kentucky at Florida. The Gators will welcome the Wildcats to the O’Dome on Senior Night.
Florida returns a former player in guard Denzel Aberdeen who transferred to Kentucky after winning a national championship with the Gators. However, Aberdeen comes in as a fifth year and filed a lawsuit against the NCAA for that final year of eligibility.
Judge George Wright and the Alachua County Court granted Aberdeen a temporary injunction Tuesday, allowing him to compete with the Gators this season.
During his single season at Kentucky, Aberdeen averaged 13.5 points and 3.4 assists while shooting 36.3% from the 3-point line.
The game will play a key role in seeding heading into the SEC Tournament. Kentucky basketball is ranked No. 19 in Blue Ribbon’s preseason Top 25. Florida has won four of the last five in the series with the Wildcats, beating them three times last season.
The only UF-UK date of the season will be the first time the Gators won’t play in Lexington since 1962.
Hoping to make a deep March run, the Gators want to take this game to kick the month off right.
These games will prove a lot about Florida’s depth and ability this season. For now, practice continues as the team gears up for exhibition games.
The team opens exhibition play against Baylor on Sunday, Oct. 18, in Jacksonville.
