What History Says About Florida’s CFP Chances After 4-0 Start
The Florida Gators are 4-0 for the first time since 2019 and are ranked in the top eight of the Associated Press poll for the first time since 2020. With an undefeated record and an expanded College Football Playoff field, fans are wondering if Florida can make its first CFP appearance this season.
So how often do Southeastern Conference teams make the CFP after they open the season 4-0? WRUF crunched the numbers from 2021-25 to find out what history tells us about the Gators’ chances of earning a berth.
There are a few factors to consider. First, the College Football Playoff did not expand to a 12-team format until the 2024 season. Next, the Pac-12 Conference was still considered a Power league before dissolving after the 2023 season.
To account for those variables, WRUF applied a hypothetical 12-team format to the 2021-23 seasons using the CFP’s originally proposed 6+6 model it was supposed to install in 2022. That format included the six highest-ranked conference champions and six at-large bids. Beginning in 2024, the analysis uses the CFP’s current “5+7” 12-team format. Any CFP rule changes from the 2024-26 seasons did not affect the number of SEC teams that made the field.
From 2021-25, 24 SEC teams opened the season 4-0. Twelve of them (50%) earned or would have earned a spot in a 12-team field. Just using data from 2024 onward, when the 12-team playoff was introduced, five of 12 (41.7%) qualified for the CFP.
Furthermore, teams from 2021-25 which started 4-0 and qualified for a 12-team CFP all finished as top-nine seeds, meaning none were on the bubble.
Florida’s surge to No. 8 in the AP poll boosts its odds. Twelve of 19 (63.2%) SEC teams from 2021-25 that were in the AP top 10 after Week 5 qualified or would have qualified for a 12-team CFP.
Recent history also shows that a 4-0 start does not guarantee a CFP berth. In 2024, Alabama, Ole Miss and Missouri went 9-3 and missed the CFP. In 2025, four programs which moved to 4-0 missed the playoff. Two of them, LSU and Mississippi State, logged seven and five wins, respectively.
Five SEC schools are 4-0: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi State and Texas. All five still have two of the other undefeated teams on their schedules. Those matchups will reshape the playoff race, especially with the SEC expanding to a nine-game league schedule.
Another factor is that in four of the last five seasons, at least one SEC team that went 3-1 qualified or would have qualified for a 12-team CFP. Last season, Alabama and Georgia began 3-1, and both secured a spot in the CFP field. No. 9 Ole Miss, No. 11 LSU and No. 17 Tennessee are just a few SEC schools with a 3-1 record this season.
Florida’s 52-28 victory against then-No. 4 Ole Miss put it in a much stronger position than if it had been 3-1. Since 2021, six of 30 (20%) SEC teams that started 3-1 were selected for a 12-team field. SEC programs which start 4-0, compared to 3-1, have 2.5 times the odds of making the CFP.
ESPN’s FPI projects the Gators to finish 10-2, with losses at Texas and Georgia in Atlanta later this month. For 4-0 SEC schools, the difference between 10-2 and 9-3 has been significant. Nine of 10 SEC teams which went 10-2 qualified for a 12-team CFP from 2021-25, while none of the three squads that finished 9-3 did.
