Florida Women’s Golf Ties for Fourth at The Ally After Illness Cancels Final Round
Florida women’s golf’s participation in The Ally hosted by Mississippi State was cut short due to a widespread illness.
The tournament was canceled before the final round Wednesday. Both coaches and players were impacted by this illness, affecting at least 13 out of the 17 teams, per Golfweek.
“We don’t know the source of the illness but we fear it may be contagious and that was the scariest part about playing the final round,” Mississippi State coach Charlie Ewing said in a statement to Golfweek.
Coaches agreed to cancel the tournament, prioritizing the health of their athletes.
There is no information on whether any of the Florida golfers caught the illness. One coach estimated around 75% of the field may have been struck with symptoms, according to Golfweek.
Since the tournament was cut short, it was made official after two rounds. The Gators tied for fourth shooting 5-over after 36 holes. The team was led by junior Addison Klonowski who shot 1-over, earning her a share of 11th place.
Although this tournament ended earlier than expected, Florida still has one more tournament before the end of its fall season.
In a week, the Gators head to Chapel Hill to compete in the Tar Heel Invitational. The Gators have consistently placed in the top five of each tournament they’ve participated in this season, and look to clinch their second team win in North Carolina.
The last time Florida competed in this tournament was in 2023, when the Gators swept both the team and individual titles.
