Scouting Texas: Arch Manning, Skilled WRs Pose Challenge for Florida
Florida’s two-game losing streak has left the Gators searching for answers. They’ll have little time to find them before facing a No. 7 Texas team eager to rebound from its first loss of the season.
Florida (4-2, 2-2 SEC) travels to Texas on Saturday to face the Longhorns (4-1, 1-1 SEC), who fell 27-24 to Oklahoma last weekend. Texas enters the matchup averaging 31.4 per game while allowing just 16, presenting a challenge for a Florida team that has struggled on both sides of the ball in consecutive losses.
Texas’ Passing Attack Tests Florida’s Secondary
Quarterback Arch Manning threw for 260 yards and three touchdowns against Oklahoma, connecting with wide receiver Cam Coleman for 110 yards and a 41-yard touchdown.
Texas’ receiving group presents a significant challenge for a Florida secondary that struggled against South Carolina. Gamecocks quarterback LaNorris Sellers completed 23 of 35 passes for 279 yards, and the Gators failed to record a pass breakup.
Florida defensive coordinator Brad White recognized the challenge the Longhorns’ receivers present.
“It’s about as skilled a group of wideouts as you’ll find in the country,” White said Tuesday.
White said Florida must improve its communication and execution to slow down opposing passing attacks.
The Gators have also struggled to get off the field on third down. South Carolina converted 10 of its final 14 third-down attempts Saturday, extending drives and putting additional pressure on Florida’s defense.
Against a Texas offense with the talent to create explosive plays through the air, Florida will need to limit breakdowns in coverage and finish defensive possessions.
However, Texas has struggled to sustain drives on third down, converting just six of 26 attempts in its last two games. The Gators will need to take advantage of those opportunities by getting Texas off the field and giving its offense more opportunities to find its rhythm.
Colin Simmons Leads a Disruptive Texas Defense
Texas’ defensive front could be just as problematic for Florida as its passing game.
Edge Colin Simmons leads the nation with 9.5 sacks and 12 tackles for loss through five games. Simmons recorded a school-record 5.5 sacks in Texas’ 20-17 win over Tennessee before adding two sacks, three tackles for loss and a forced fumble against Oklahoma.
Linebacker Rasheem Biles has also emerged as a key contributor. The senior transfer from Pittsburgh leads Texas with 42 tackles and has recorded two interceptions. Biles finished with 12 tackles and two tackles for loss against Oklahoma.
Florida could face additional uncertainty at quarterback. Aaron Philo is listed as questionable with a shoulder injury, leaving sophomore Tramell Jones Jr. as a potential starter. Jones has completed 23 of 29 passes for 252 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions across his four appearances this season.
Regardless of who starts, Florida will need to protect its quarterback and avoid putting itself in obvious passing situations against a Texas defense that has consistently disrupted plays behind the line of scrimmage. The Longhorns recorded nine tackles for loss against Oklahoma, putting the pressure on for the offensive line.
White also emphasized the importance of containing Manning when he escapes the pocket, noting the quarterback’s ability to turn broken plays into significant gains.
Texas Looks to Bounce Back After First Loss
Texas’ defense was also able to limit Oklahoma to 238 total yards, including just 83 rushing yards, and recorded nine tackles for loss. Simmons led the defensive effort with two sacks and a forced fumble, continuing a dominant season for the junior.
The Longhorns’ performance against Oklahoma highlighted the talent on both sides of the ball, even in the narrow defeat. Sumrall praised Texas coach Steve Sarkisian and the roster he has assembled in Texas, describing the Longhorns as a national championship contender.
“What they’ve built roster-wise, you look at and you’re like, ‘That’s what a national championship contender looks like,’” Sumrall said Monday.
