Florida Turns to Tramell Jones Jr. at Quarterback Against Texas

October 17, 2026

It was always a tall task for Florida to take down No. 7 Texas on its home field. The hopes of leaving Austin, Texas, victorious have become slimmer, as UF will be without one of its key leaders.

Quarterback Aaron Philo has been ruled out for the Gators’ matchup with the Longhorns due to injury. Philo, who has thrown for 1,341 yards and nine touchdowns during his first season with Florida, missed his first start of the season. The Georgia Tech transfer suffered a shoulder injury in the 38-19 loss to South Carolina, leaving him sidelined throughout the week and leading to his absence.

In Philo’s place, Sophomore Tramell Jones Jr. took the field Saturday. Jones has never made a start across his six appearances for the Gators. The Jacksonville native has thrown for 443 yards and four touchdowns compared to two touchdowns in his young NCAA career.

Jones gets the opportunity to showcase his abilities in a starting capacity after a tumultuous offseason quarterback battle that was eventually won by Philo. While the pressure of facing a top-10 team on the road for his first start mounts, Jones is still taking the fast-paced week in stride and embracing the moment.

“It hasn’t hit me yet. I think once I get on that field, and I take the field, that’s when it will really hit me,” Jones told Sean Kelley on the Gators Sports Network. “But this is the moment I’ve been preparing for all my life, and I want to be at the highest stage, and this is the highest stage against one of the best teams in the country.”

If it has not hit Jones yet, there is a good chance that the events of this week have not hit Florida coach Jon Sumrall yet either. Following a pair of losses in which Florida only scored 36 points combined, the Gators fell from No. 8 to out of the AP Top 25 Poll swiftly and left Sumrall searching for answers. The first-year coach may not have expected that among those questions, he would have to find an answer as to who his quarterback would be.

Reports from ESPN’s Pete Thamel on Wednesday indicated that Philo was dealing with a shoulder injury and would proceed through the week as questionable, a status was confirmed that night by the SEC Initial Availability report. Later reports from On3’s Pete Nakos noted that Philo was throwing in a limited capacity and would likely be a game-time decision.

That made way for Jones to prepare as the starter against the Longhorns and be ready if his number was to be called. Jones was forced into the spotlight throughout the rapid and uncertain process and was thrust into the role mere hours before kickoff, a move that Sumrall feels confident in and that will not drastically change how the offense operates.

“From a physical standpoint, both players have a lot more in common than they do different. The thing about Tramell is you go back to the spring and you could tell he was way behind offensively,” Sumrall said before kickoff on the Gators Sports Network. “He’s now at a place where has a much better foundation in what he’s trying to get done with each play and has communicated at a better level.”

Jones entering the contest as the starter marks the second straight time that Florida has started a backup quarterback when facing Texas on the road. When the Gators charged into Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium in 2024, Yale transfer and third-stringer Aidan Warner led the way after injuries to both Graham Mertz and DJ Lagway.

That appearance did not end well for Warner, who threw for 132 yards and two interceptions while only completing 48% of his passes in the 49-17 loss to the No. 5 Longhorns. Two years later, Sumrall’s Gators enter the matchup with Texas in a similar spot.

While the situation is not ideal for a young quarterback to make their first career start on the road against one of the best defenses as an 11.5-point underdog, it is the one that Jones has been forced into. The question now remains as to how the sophomore will rise to the occasion or crack under pressure in a pivotal game for Florida to get its season back on track.

Kickoff between the Gators and the Longhorns is set for 12 p.m. on ABC, with coverage beginning at 9 a.m. on WRUF 98.1-FM/850-AM/103.7 HD2.
