What is Florida’s Secret to Success Against Texas?
Florida football mustered a win against the Texas Longhorns as massive underdog in back-to-back seasons.
Fresh off a 28-point loss to then-No. 25 Missouri and a 19-point loss to unranked South Carolina, Florida rallied from a 14-point deficit to defeat then-No. 7 Texas 27-24 on Saturday.
The comeback mirrored last season’s matchup, when the Gators defeated then-No. 9 Texas 29-21 at The Swamp on Oct. 4, 2025, after dropping three consecutive contests to South Florida, Louisiana State and Miami.
In both seasons when facing Texas, Florida entered the matchup struggling to find consistency, but left with a victory against a nationally ranked opponent. The back-to-back wins against UT raise a question: What has allowed the Gators to rise to the occasion against the Longhorns?
2026: The Defense Makes the Difference
Coming into the matchup, the Gators had struggled defensively and their group ranked No. 110. But the unit delivered one of its strongest performances of the season Saturday.
The defining moment came late in the fourth quarter. With Texas trailing 27-24 and threatening a comeback, Florida linebacker Myles Graham sacked quarterback Arch Manning and forced a fumble. Defensive back Kanye Clark recovered the ball with less than two minutes remaining, helping secure Florida’s victory.
The defense that had struggled in the previous two games made the difference in Florida’s first win since September by frustrating Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning and their running game. Manning was sacked five times.
2026: A Tramell Jones Jr. and Jadan Baugh Game
With starting quarterback Aaron Philo sidelined due to a shoulder injury, backup Tramell Jones Jr.’s name was called. He made a lasting impression in his first game as a starter, passing for 155 yards and two touchdowns. Jones took care of the football, completed 62% of his passes and didn’t turn it over. The Gators faced an early 17-3 deficit as their offense struggled to gain headway. Jones helped Florida regain momentum before halftime, connecting with tight end Lacota Dippre for his first touchdown of the afternoon.
Running back Jadan Baugh also contributed as he carried the ball 25 times for 91 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter that gave Florida a 27-17 lead.
2025: Breakthrough Performances From Lagway and Wilson
The Gators’ victory against Texas in 2025 started the similar pattern repeated Saturday. Coming off three straight losses, Florida relied on standout individual performances and pressure on the Longhorns’ offense to secure the victory.
Florida entered its home matchup against then-No. 9 Texas with a 1-3 record. The Gators responded with a 29–21 victory, their first against the Longhorns all-time.
Quarterback DJ Lagway completed 21 of his 28 passes for 298 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman wide receiver Dallas Wilson made an immediate impact in his first career start, catching six passes for 111 yards and reeled in both touchdowns.
Wilson’s 55-yard score late in the third quarter extended Florida’s lead to 15 points and gave the Gators enough momentum down the stretch.
Baugh also played a significant role, rushing for 107 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, the Gators sacked Manning six times and picked him off twice. Florida’s front seven limited Texas to 52 rushing yards and disrupted its ability to establish consistent offensive play.
So, What Is Florida’s Secret?
The two victories show a consistent pattern: Florida has paired timely offensive performances with defensive pressure at critical moments.
What connected the games was Florida’s ability to execute when the opportunity arose. The Gators generated pressure on Manning and made critical plays in the closing stages in each contest.
If Florida can consistently combine a strong defense and a balanced offense, the wins against Texas won’t be upsets in an otherwise inconsistent season.
