Florida State Faces Financial, Roster Challenges Following Norvell Firing

November 4, 2026

After months of speculation, Florida State did the one thing that many considered inevitable by firing football coach Mike Norvell.

But Norvell’s departure is not the only problem facing the Seminoles. With mounting financial concerns, an injury to star receiver Duce Robinson and a football program struggling to regain its national prominence, Florida State finds itself in a difficult position.

Norvell was fired Sunday following a 36-24 home loss to Clemson and a 3-5 start to the season. Florida State now owes Norvell, who finished 41-39 overall, 23–30 in the ACC over seven seasons and 2-3 against Florida, about $50 million under the terms of his buyout, adding more financial burden to the mounds of debt that Florida State athletics has accumulated.

The university disclosed $437 million in athletics-related debt in the 2025 fiscal year, which is second highest behind Penn State’s $534.7 million.

Under the terms of Novell’s buyout, he is owed 85% of his remaining salary through the 2031 season, payable in monthly installments or a lump sum. The payout would rank as the third-largest buyout in college football history, behind Jimbo Fisher’s $77 million at Texas A&M and Brian Kelly’s $54 million at LSU.

Florida State named Rick Stockstill interim head coach shortly after Norvell’s dismissal. Stockstill, a quarterback under legendary coach Bobby Bowden from 1977 to 1981, returned to the Seminoles in 2024 as director of scouting for offense.

Defensive coordinator Tony White and safeties coach Evan Cooper were also relieved of their duties.

Aside from coaching changes, the Seminoles will have to finish out this season without their leading receiver. Robinson will be sidelined the rest of the season with a torn ACL, according to On3’s Pete Nakos.

Robinson is far and away FSU’s best wideout, leading the team in receptions (24), receiving yards (438) and touchdowns (four).

Quarterback Ashton Daniels will have to rely on his other receiving options to replace Robinson’s production.

Just three years removed from an undefeated regular season and an ACC championship, Florida State seems far from the national prominence it once knew. Even after the departure of Fischer and Willie Taggart’s 9-12 record, Florida State was deemed as a destination where one could contend, although it may not be seen as such anymore.

Quickly after Norvell was let go, several coaches emerged as potential candidates to replace him. Among them was Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz, who quickly shut down any speculation.

“I’m not a candidate at Florida State,” Drinkwitz said. “I want to clear that up.”

Kelly is one coach who has expressed interest in the Florida State job. After being let go at LSU, he took the role of a broadcaster at CBS Sports. His interest in Tallahassee signals a potential return to the sideline.

“I’ve got a great history with Florida State, great games,” Kelly said. “I know what that’s like, the history and tradition of Florida State, playing in that state, and the fan base.”

With Norvell out, financial woes and roster uncertainty, the Seminoles’ problems stretch far beyond the confines of Doak Campbell Stadium.

Finding a new head coach will address one of Florida State’s biggest immediate concerns. However, whoever takes over in Tallahassee will inherit more than just a struggling football program, with financial troubles and roster uncertainty presenting challenges beyond the X’s and O’s.
