Breaking News: Florida’s Tramell Jones Jr. to Get Start Against Oklahoma
Tramell Jones Jr. will get another opportunity to lead Florida on Saturday, according to multiple media reports Thursday.
The sophomore from Jacksonville will make his second start and first at The Swamp when the No. 24 Gators (5-3, 3-3 SEC) take on Oklahoma (4-4, 2-3) at 7:45 p.m.
Jones takes over as QB1 after splitting playing time with Aaron Philo during Florida’s 27-8 loss to Georgia last Saturday in Atlanta. Philo opened the game but was replaced by Jones in the second quarter.
Jones finished 18-of-25 passing for 172 yards and an interception against the Bulldogs. He also scored Florida’s only touchdown on a 2-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner said Tuesday that the coaching staff has been encouraged by Jones’ development, particularly his ability to make plays when things break down.
“I attribute that to a lot of poise and preparation,” Faulkner said. “I thought he did a good job.”
Jones’ first start came at then-No. 7 Texas on Oct. 17 when Philo was sidelined with a shoulder injury. He led Florida to a 27-24 upset, completing 22 of 35 passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns while adding 41 rushing yards.
Philo started Florida’s first six games of the season before missing the Texas matchup. He returned against Georgia, but threw two interceptions before being replaced.
Coverage Saturday begins at 4:45 p.m. on WRUF 98.1-FM/850-AM/103.7 HD2 and at 7:45 p.m. on the SEC Network.
