Verlander Wins 19th As Tigers Top Rays

Detroit ace Justin Verlander wins his big league best 19th game Monday as his Detroit Tigers stop the Tampa Bay Rays 5-2 in St.Petersburg. Verlander’s 19 wins matches his career high and he’s won his last seven decisions.

In other American League action, Seattle slips by slumping Cleveland 3-2 as the Tribe falls five and a half games behind Detroit in the AL Central. Texas blanks Boston 4-0 to increase the Texas lead to four and a half games over idle Los Angeles in the West and Boston now trails New York by a full game in the East.

In the National League, Cliff Lee and the Philadelphia Phillies rock New York 10-0; red hot Atlanta wins its fifth straight 3-1 over Chicago; Milwaukeeand Pittsburgh split a doubleheader with Milwaukee winning 8-1 and Pittsburgh winning 9-2 while St.Louis lost to Los Angeles 2-1. Washington downs Arizona 4-1 as the idle San Francisco Giants move to within a game of the D’Backs in the NL West.
