Texas A&M Not In SEC…Yet

August 15, 2011

SEC presidents have met and voted on the possibility of Texas A&M joining the SEC and at least for now, the league has voted to stay where it is at with 12 teams.

University of Florida president Bernie Machen is the chairman of the SEC Presidents and Chancellors Committee and in a statement, he said the vote had taken place to keep the league at 12 teams.

However, the statement also went on to say that “future conditions may make it advantageous to expand the number of institutions in the league.” In other words, the door does not seem slammed shut on the league expanding by one or two teams.

There have been widespread reports that Texas A&M is interested in leaving the Big 12 conference and the Big 12 also met over the weekend to discuss this situation. The league’s Board of Directors gave a strong nod of approval and its desire to have the Aggies stay in the league.
