The San Francisco Giants built a 7-2 lead over the Atlanta Braves and then had to withstand a furious rally before winning 7-5 on Wednesday. The win lifts the Giants to within two and a half games of NL West leading Arizona, who was beaten 9-2 by Philadelphia. The Braves still lead the wild card race.
In other National League games, Milwaukee is now running away with the Central Division; the Brewers beat Los Angeles 3-1 to keep a seven game lead over St.Louis which beat Pittsburgh 7-2. Houston, New York, Colorado and Cincinnati also scored wins.
In the American League, Texas now leads Los Angeles by six games in the West after a 4-3 win over the Angels.
In other AL games, New York still leads Boston by half a game in the East; the Yanks lose to Kansas City 5-4 while David Price and Tampa Bay top the Sox 4-0. Detroit leads Cleveland by two games in the Central; the Tigers lost to Minnesota 6-5 while Cleveland beats Chicago 4-1. Oakland and Toronto also posted victories.
