Gators Women’s Tennis Wins Back To Back NCAA National Championships

The University of Florida women’s tennis claimed its second consecutive national title and the program’s sixth overall, defeating UCLA 4-0 in the championship match. After taking the doubles point and getting quick singles wins from Alexandra Cercone and Sofie Oyen, for the second consecutive year Lauren Embree clinched the national title by winning her match.

It marked the first time in the program’s history they claimed back-to-back national titles.

The second-seeded Gators finished the year with a 27-1 record and winners of 22 straight matches. UCLA entered as the No. 1 overall seed and finished the year with a 26-3 record on the year.

For Gators’ head coach Roland Thornqvist it was his third national crown (2003, 2011, 2012).

The national title was the University of Florida’s 28thoverall and second this year (men’s indoor track and field). It was the 19thnational title under the direction of athletics director Jeremy Foley.
