University of Florida men’s basketball coach Billy Donovan has led the United States 18 and under team to a gold medal after beating host Brazil 81-56 yesterday. The U.S. team won all five of its games to win the FIBA Americas 18 And Under world championship.
In other sports news…
** Rain has forced the College World Series to play three games today after the game between South Carolina and Kent State was rained out last night. Those teams play at noon today followed by FSU and Arizona at 5pm and Arkansas against the Carolina/Kent State winner at 9pm.
** Although not official until after the College World Series the University of Florida has clinched second place in the prestigious Directors’ Cup standings. The Gators only trail Stanford after winning a school record three national titles this past year. The Directors’ Cup is a creation of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and USA Today.
** The Atlanta Braves top the New York Yankees 10-5 Wednesday in New York as the Braves hit five home runs. The Florida Marlins were pounded by Boston 15-5 while Washington took care of Tampa Bay 3-2 a day after Washington complained about Tampa Bay pitcher Joel Peralta having pine tar on his glove.
** The Miami Heat go for an NBA title tonight as Game 5 of the NBA Finals takes place in Miami between the Heat and the Oklahoma City Thunder; Miami is up 3-1 in the series.
