Some current and former Gator athletes had a good day Thursday at the Summer Olympic Games in London.
Former Gators Abby Wambach and Heather Mitts have a gold medal after the U.S. women’s soccer team avenges a World Cup loss to Japan with a 2-1 win over Japan. Carli Lloyd scores both U.S. goals and the team wins its third straight Olympic gold.
In track and field, Christian Taylor won the triple jump with fellow Gator Will Claye ending up in second place.
In other action, the U.S. women’s basketball game reaches the gold medal game after beating Australia 86-73. The U.S. has not lost a game in the Olympics since 1992 and will now play France for the gold after they beat Russia 81-64.
The U.S. men’s team faces Argentina today in a semifinal matchup.
And Usain Bolt stars again; he becomes the only man in history to win gold medals in the in the 100 and 200 meters at consecutive Summer Olympic Games. He beats the field in the 200 meters on Thursday in a blistering 19.32 seconds.
