The No. 22 ranked Florida soccer team celebrates a win today after beating instate rival FIU 3-0 at home. The Gators had returned back home after an up and down journey on the road having one win, one loss, and a tie. Of the three goals scored yesterday, Florida sophomore midfielder Havana Solaun managed to put the ball in the back of the net twice and Florida redshirt senior forward McKenzie Barney also scored a goal. Florida head coach Becky Burleigh says this game can set Solaun up to go on a roll as the season continues.
The Gators had a total of 24 shots attempted while FIU only registered eight shot attempts. An advantage that Florida had in their victory over FIU was the steady rotation of fresh legs. All ten substitutes for Florida played in the game while the Panthers were only working with five substitutes. The Gators controlled the tempo of the game and Burleigh was very pleased with the team’s performance but adds her team must work on taking better advantage of the scoring opportunities they have and finishing out games.
Barney agrees with Burleigh on how “finishing” and “executing” are major factors they want to improve and focus on looking forward into the season.
The Gators look to carry on their momentum from last night as they take on the New Mexico Lobos this Sunday here in Gainesville at 1pm. You can get coverage live on ESPN Radio 850/900 at 12:50pm.
