The New York Yankees enjoyed a double digit game lead in the American League East but that once big lead in July has gone away in September. The Tampa Bay Rays knock off the struggling Yankees 5-2 Tuesday as the Rays move to within a game and a half of the Yankees in the division.
But the Rays must also catch the Baltimore Orioles who are now tied with New York after pounding Toronto 12-0. The Orioles and Yankees are also tied for the wild card lead with Oakland after the A’s lost to Los Angeles 6-1.
In other AL games, Cleveland beats Detroit 3-2; Kansas City stops Texas 6-3, Minnesota beats Chicago and Boston downs Seattle 4-3.
In the National League, Atlanta is beaten 6-0 by Colorado and Miami loses to Milwaukee 8-4. Atlanta has a two game wild card lead on St.Louis, a 5-1 winner against New York.
In other games, Washington clubs Chicago 11-5; Pittsburgh downs Houston 6-2; San Diego tops Los Angeles 6-3; Arizona beats San Francisco 8-6 and Cincinnati nips Philadelphia 2-1.
