A coaching icon in college basketball retires, Notre Dame gets a new home and much more in our Thursday Sports News And Notes…
** Long time University of Connectictut men’s basketball coach Jim Calhoun is retiring. The 70 year old Calhoun has suffered from a number of ailments in recent years and his program is not eligible for the postseason this year because of poor academic performance as outlined in NCAA guidelines. He has won three national titles; assistant Kevin Ollie is the favorite to replace Calhoun.
** Notre Dame is leaving the Big East Conference to join the ACC in every sport except football where they will remain independent. However, the Irish will play five games a season against ACC opponents. The Big East announced Notre Dame would have to pay a fee for leaving the league and it could take months for the move to finally happen.
** The NFL has a game tonight as the Green Bay Packers host the Chicago Bears in an NFC North matchup; the Bears are 1-0 while the Packers are 0-1.
** Former Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Andre Ware will be a guest on our Sportscene sports talk show at noon today; he will discuss the Florida-Tennessee matchup and other things college football.
