Monday was an eventful night for several Major League Baseball teams.
The Washington Nationals lost 2-0 to the Philadelphia Phillies but they still celebrated winning the National League East after second place Atlanta lost 2-1 to Pittsburgh. A Washington franchise has not been to the playoffs since 1933.
Also in the NL, St.Louis inches closer to a wild card spot by beating Cincinnati 4-2 but Los Angeles remains alive after beating San Francisco. The Cardinals magic number is one to clinch a playoff spot.
In the American League, Detroit wins the AL Central by beating Kansas City 6-3; also in this game, Miguel Cabrera hits his 44th homer and he now leads all the Triple Crown categories as he tries to become the first player since Carl Yaztrezemski in 1967 to win the Triple Crown.
Tampa Bay was eliminated from the playoffs despite beating Baltimore 5-3 to win their 11th game in the last 12 tries. The Orioles are now a game back of New York in the AL East after the Yankees maul Boston 10-2.
And Oakland has clinched at least a wild card spot after beating Texas. The A’s can still win the AL West as they trail the Rangers by just one game with two to play.
