Today is Media Day for both the Gator men’s and women’s basketball team and the Gator men’s team will have another Donovan on its roster.
Billy Donovan will join the team coached by his father, Billy Donovan, as a walk-on. The younger Donovan had been playing at Catholic University, a Division III school in Washington, D.C.
The younger Donovan will not be able to play in any games this year per NCAA transfer rules but he can practice with the team; he will be eligible to play in games in the 2013-14 season.
Expectations are high for both Gator teams this year; both teams are coming off NCAA Tournament appearances. The men have a solid nucleus of players back while the Gator women have perhaps it best class ever coming in during the tenure of coach Amanda Butler including 6’6″ center Vicky McIntyre who transferred from Oklahoma State and will be eligible to play this season.
And that class will probably have to contribute right away with only one senior on the team in post player Jennifer George. Guard/forward Sydney Moss, the daughter of NFL star Randy Moss, 6’0″ guard Christian Mercer and 5’11” guard Chandler Cooper could also help the Gator cause right away.
The Gator men have star players back like guard Kenny Boynton and post player Patric Young but they also have some new faces at the guard position like 6’4″ Dillon Graham; 6’0″ Braxton Ogbueze and 6’4″ Michael Frazier.
