This Friday a few local Alachua County high school football teams will square off in the semi-final round of the state high school playoffs.
In the District 1A round Newberry will take on undefeated and number one ranked Trenton. Newberry has won close games all season and look to pull off an upset of the Tigers. If Newberry is to pull of the upset it will need to key on running backs Stephen Smith and Cedric Stokes both of whom have rushed for over 1000 yards apiece with a combined 38 touchdowns.
Newberry High School’s head coach Chris Baker says his team’s challenging schedule has prepared them for the Tigers.
Coach Baker compliments Trenton’s team and says what they lack in depth they make up for in talent.
The expectations for Friday’s atmosphere are high. Coach Baker says it should be a “packed house”.
A 6A match up this Friday pits two 11-1 teams against each other as the Columbia County Tigers will square off against Navarre.
Also in Class 6A, the undefeated Gainesville High Purple Hurricanes take on last year’s state champions Seffner Armwood. These two teams met last year in the playoffs when Armwood ended GHS’s season.
Gainesville High School head coach James Thomson says his team may have struggled last week in a win over Ocala Vanguard but hopes they have learned from that and will be prepared for this game.
Coach Thomson compliments Armwood’s team and is looking forward to a good matchup.
Thomson says his team is resilient, and play hard.
This game will be at 7:30pm at Citizens Field in Gainesville.
