LSU keeps its football coach, Auburn continues a search for a new one and more in our Thursday Sports News And Notes…
** Rumors about LSU football coach Les Miles being wooed by Arkansas may have moved the school’s administration to lock up Miles with a new contract. He has a new seven year deal with a raise.
** Auburn and Tennessee are still looking for new coaches and one report has former Gator assistant and current Louisville coach Charlie Strong interviewing for the job although he has denied the report. And Jon Gruden says he’s received no offer to coach at Tennessee which reportedly would have included part ownership of the Cleveland Browns.
** Speaking of Louisville, big game tonight for them as they face Rutgers with a possible BCS bowl berth on the line. The Big East title is up for grabs in this one.
** The conference shuffling continues as it looks like Conference USA will be adding Middle Tennessee State and Florida Atlantic. Florida International already accepted a bid to play in the league starting next year.
** In MLB news, the Atlanta Braves have reportedly signed free agent outfielder B.J. Upton to a five year, $75 million deal. Cincinnati has reportedly signed reliever Jonathan Broxton and the New York Yankees get veteran Andy Pettitte back for one season.
** And in golf, the U.S. Golf Association wants to ban how some golfers anchor the so called “belly putters” top their bodies when putting; the powers that be feel players should have to hold the club away from their bodies. The proposed rule change will get comment and not be put into effect if passed until 2016.
