** The third ranked Gator gymnastics team opens its season tonight with a home meet against Ball State.   Florida comes off a second place finish in the NCAA Championship a year ago and this year features a roster with a nice mix of youth and experience.

** The Florida women’s basketball team loses at number six Kentucky 76-69 in its SEC season opener.   Florida (11-4) got 21 points from guard Jaterra Bonds but the Wildcats (13-1) prevail in the end.   Florida will host LSU Sunday.

** The Cotton Bowl airs tonight here on ESPN Radio 850/900 starting at 7pm as Texas A&M faces Oklahoma.

** Oregon wins the Fiesta Bowl after beating Kansas State 35-17 in what could be Oregon coach Chip Kelly’s last game with the Ducks; he is being courted by several NFL teams.

** FSU defensive end Bjoern Werner will skip his senior season and enter the NFL Draft.

** FIU has hired Ron Turner as its new coach and Penn State coach Bill O’Brien will stay at the school and get a raise after getting some interest from NFL teams for some of their openings.
