Basketball to baseball to football and more in our Friday Sports Update…
** In local women’s high school basketball, PK Yonge, Eastside and GHS and Santa Fe get wins in regional quarterfinal action and move on to further play.
** Eastside High School’s ‘s men’s soccer team will play tonight against Orlando Bishop Moore in a regional final for the right to advance to the state playoffs in Class 2A.
** Local men’s high school hoops teams are also in district play over the weekend. Buchholz, GHS, Eastside, Santa Fe and PK Yonge are among the schools looking to advance with wins.
** In SEC men’s hoops, Georgia at home knocks off LSU 91-78; the Dogs are 11-10 overall and 5-4 in SEC play while LSU falls to 14-7 and to 5-4 in league play.
** Spring training has officially begun as pitchers and catchers for the Arizona Diamondbacks have reported for work. In a sad note, baseball Hall of Fame member Ralph Kiner dies at age 91; he was an outfielder for 10 years mostly for Pittsburgh.
** Former Jacksonville Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio will stay on as the defensive coordinator with the Denver Broncos after signing a new two year deal.
** The Gator softball team opens its season with a 10-3 win against the Bulls of South Florida. The Gators will stay in Tampa for the weekend to play five more games in a tournament format.
