The dog days of summer are here from a sports perspective but still plenty to talk about in our Monday Sports Update… ** The final 16 for the World Cup is now set. France plays Nigeria and Germany faces Algeria today. The USA plays Belgium tomorrow in a match you can hear live on ESPN 850 WRUF starting at 3:30pm. ** Wimbledon goes into its final week. The top two women’s seeds have been bounced from the tournament but on the men’s side, four of the top five seeds are still playing. ** In baseball, Oakland completes a three game sweep of Miami with a 4-3 win while Tampa Bay takes three of four from Baltimore with a 12-7 win. Atlanta completes a sweep of Philadelphia with a 3-2 win. ** Today in baseball, Tampa Bay begins a series on the road with the New York Yankees while the Braves host the New York Mets. Miami is off. ** The Miami Heat’s “Big
Three” have all opted out of their contracts, becoming free agents. This could free up large amounts of money for the Heat to go out and improve a team that made it to the NBA Finals this past season. ** The Milwaukee Bucks have offered the New Jersey Nets a second round draft choice to pry coach Jason Kidd loose but the Nets reportedly want a first round selection to let Kidd coach the Bucks.
