The Gator women’s basketball team will go for its third win of the young season when it plays against St. John’s Red Storm (1-0) tonight in Queens, New York.
This is the first road trip of the season for the Gators and it’s also the first time they’ll meet St.John’s in Carnesecca Arena. This is the third meeting between the two teams, with Florida’s only win against them coming last season at the O’Connell Center.
This game will probably come down to whether or not Florida will be able to maintain its offensive proficiency against St. John’s stingy defense.
Led by their leading scorer Ronni Williams, the Gators are averaging just over 87 points per game, while St. John’s only allowed 50 points from its opponent in its season opener. In addition to that, the Red Storm allowed just 18 points in the paint.
The Gators have done much of their damage in the paint early in the season with an average of 55 points per game beneath the basket. If the Gators are unable to replicate the kind of offensive production they’ve become accustomed to in the paint, their outside shooting will become a major factor in this game.
Although the Gators played a near perfect game against Longwood on Monday afternoon, one area that continues to be a sore spot for the team is their shooting beyond the arc. Florida shot just 28 percent from 3-point land against the Lancers and is averaging 30 percent from that range for the season so far.
