The Gator women’s basketball team (4-1) is gearing up to face Virginia Tech (4-2) tonight in the O’Connell Center for the first time ever in the regular season. Although the Gators are 2-1 all-time against the Hokies, the last time these two teams met on the hardwood, Virginia Tech beat the Gators by double digits in postseason play.
However, both teams come into this contest with lots of momentum as a result of recent wins. The Gators have won two straight since losing their first road game of the season against St. John’s and the Hokies have won four of their last five games.
This game may simply come down to how well Florida plays defense and whether or not they will be able to keep Virginia Tech from shooting a high percentage from the field. The Hokies have shot an average of 47 percent from the field on the road, while the Gators have shot 50 percent from the field at home so far.
The Gators have held their opponents to an average of 65 points per game this season and the Hokies are averaging just a little bit above that number at 66 points per game behind their leading scorer guard Rachel Camp. If the Gators can hold the Hokies to their scoring average for the season and continue to score at their own average of 82 points per game, they’ll have a good chance at earning their fifth win of the season.
The Gators leading scorer is forward Ronni Williams who will most likely come off the bench just like she did in their last win against Georgetown as she continues to nurse a sprained ankle.
