Lots of things today to discuss in sports…the Gators in NCAA volleyball, college football job openings, the College Football Playoff, NFL, NBA and more in our Monday Sports Update…
** The Florida volleyball team is the overall eighth seed for the NCAA Tournament that starts this weekend. Florida will host Alabama State Friday night and, if it wins, play the winner of Miami and Central Florida on Saturday in Gainesville.
** The University of Florida begins its search in earnest now for a new football coach to replace Will Muschamp. Defensive coordinator DJ Durkin will serve as UF’s interim coach for its bowl game.
** Two SEC defensive coordinators have been fired at Texas A&M and at Auburn, fueling speculation that Muschamp could land at one of those schools. South Carolina has a decision to make about its defensive coordinator, Lorenzo Ward, as well.
** Bo Pellini has been fired as Nebraska’s football coach and Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris will be the new head coach at SMU.
** The new College Football Playoff Committee poll will be released tomorrow. There could be a shake up in the top four after Mississippi State lost and FSU was unimpressive in beating Florida.
** In the NFL, Jacksonville gets its second win of the year by rallying to beat the New York Giants 25-24; Tampa Bay lost to Cincinnati 14-13. Tonight, the Miami Dolphins play the New York Jets on Monday Night Football.
** In the NBA, Orlando gets a rare road win, beating Phoenix 93-90. Miami beat the New York Knicks 86-79. Orlando is off today while Miami is at Washington tonight.
